I recently had the opportunity to be invited down to the Coventry Transport Museum, and it was a fascinating journey through the history of transportation! Since its opening in 1980, the museum has become home to one of the finest collections of vehicles in the world, and it’s recognized as the largest in public ownership.

The museum's story began in 1937 when H.W. 'Sammy' Bartleet generously gifted his private collection of cycles to the City of Coventry. This initial donation laid the foundation for what would become an extensive array of exhibits. The first motor cars were added to the collection in 1952, and since then, it has continued to grow, showcasing the evolution of transport over the decades.

The museum officially opened its doors in 1960 as part of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. As the transport collection expanded, the vehicles were displayed across various local sites until they found their permanent home in 1980. Today, the Coventry Transport Museum houses an impressive collection that includes 300 cycles, 120 motorcycles, and 250 motor cars and commercial vehicles.

One of the highlights of the museum is the chance to get up close to the world’s two fastest cars: Thrust SSC and Thrust 2. These remarkable feats of British engineering are truly awe-inspiring, and it was thrilling to see them in person!

In addition to the vehicles, the museum also features extensive collections of automobilia, books, photographs, and a wealth of other archival material, preserved at the Coventry Archives within the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. Most of the collection exists thanks to the generous contributions of individual donors, showcasing the community's pride in its transport heritage.

While not all items are on display at once, the museum ensures there’s plenty to see. They’ve even curated a list of Star Vehicles —20 must-see items that highlight the best of the collection. As I explored the displays, I made sure to check off these standout exhibits, each telling its own unique story.

Visiting the Coventry Transport Museum was an enriching experience that not only highlighted the city's significant role in the transport industry but also celebrated the innovation and creativity behind the vehicles that have shaped our world. If you’re a fan of history, engineering, or simply curious about the evolution of transport, I highly recommend a visit to this incredible museum. It’s a journey through time that you won’t want to miss!
